"Is it new enough to return to the shop?"
iPody the iPod died in a fall outside its Brooklyn, NY home on June 20. It was seven months old.
In its short life it was much loved, though it never fully realized its 20 gigabyte potential. At the time of death, only 6 gigabytes of storage were reportedly used.

Can Apple fix perhaps? IF you do have to part with it, Apple will give you a discount for recycling the dead pod.
Apple offers recycling plan for your used iPod
Apple won over even technophobes with the iPod, and now it’s working on environmentalists. More than 100 stores nationwide now offer a free recycling program for those who want an environmentally sound way of disposing of their old iPod. As an incentive, Apple is offering a 10 percent discount on a new iPod on the same day consumers recycle their old iPod, iPod Mini, or iPod Photo. The new measure comes after iPods were targeted by the Computer TakeBack Campaign in January for Apple’s previously lackluster recycling presence. Equipment like iPods contain lead and other toxins that can be hazardous to the environment if not disposed of properly.

I'm hoping that when I waltz into the Apple store tomorrow with my dead iPod and proof that it is still under warrenty that they will either fix it or give me a new one.
